Why should you wear protective eyewear to watch the solar eclipse?

When the moon blocks the sun, it's not safe to look at the sun directly, according to NASA. If you look with your bare eyes, "through a camera lens, binoculars, or a telescope without a special-purpose solar filter secured over the front of the optics will instantly cause severe eye injury."

Here are some guidelines for viewing a solar eclipse:

  • View the eclipse through solar glasses during the partial eclipse before and after totality
  • You can view the eclipse without glasses during totality, this is when the moon completely covers the sun
  • Put your solar glasses back on immediately as soon as the sun starts appearing from behind the moon
