We will see what happens if House Bill 1359 passes in our state.

We hear it all the time about Texas possibly seceding from the country. I think a story like this pops up once every few years and it looks like  Texas Representative Kyle Biedermann just wants to see Texans opinion on Texas Independence.

The Texas Independence Referendum Act would give power to the people via referendum to allow the right to discuss, debate and vote on creating a path toward independence. This does not mean if this passes that Texas would gain their independence from the country immediately.

This act simply lets Texans vote,” said the Texas representative. “This decision is too big to be monopolized solely by the power brokers in our Capitol. We need to let Texans’ voices be heard! Voters of all political persuasions in Texas can agree on one thing, Washington, D.C., is and has been broken. Our federal government continuously fails our working families, seniors, taxpayers, veterans and small business owners. For decades, the promises of America and our individual liberties have been eroding. It is now time that the people of Texas are allowed the right to decide their own future. This is not a left or right political issue. Let Texans vote!”

Many people always quote the Joint Resolution for Annexing Texas to the United States. From everything I see, Texas could break itself down into smaller states, but all of those states are still a part of the United States. The 1869 Supreme Court case Texas vs. White has stated that the United States are “an indestructible union” from which no state can secede.

I'm no legal or history expert, this is just what I know. If Texas wants to find a way to secede from the country, I guess go try. This House Bill is just trying to find out if this is something Texans would want to explore.
