The Indiana Jones Easter Egg You May Have Missed in ‘Star Wars: The Force Awakens’
Nobody really knows what’s going on with Disney and Lucasfilm’s reported reboot of the Indiana Jones franchise. They say they want to do it, we know they want to do it because they paid $3 billion for this stuff, but Steven Spielberg says there’s no way he’d recast Harrison Ford. So while they figure all that out, there’s this easter egg in Star Wars: The Force Awakens to keep all the Indiana Jones fans satisfied. You probably didn’t catch it the first time around, but we’re here to help you out.
As we’ve heard, there were lots of little cameos and easter eggs in Star Wars: The Force Awakens you likely had no idea were there the first time you watched the film. Daniel Craig as a stormtrooper, Kevin Smith playing a First Order voiceover and Simon Pegg underneath tons of prosthetics to play Unkar Plutt. Here’s one that was an even deeper cut.
David Acord, supervising sound editor and sound designer for The Force Awakens, spoke to Nerdist and revealed that while they were creating a lot of the sounds and audio effects during the movie, they relied on the vast Lucasfilm archives, including Indiana Jones. Says Acord:
When the rathtar is rolling down the hallway after Han and Chewie, I put in the sound of Ben Burtt’s boulder roll sound from Raiders of the Lost Ark when the boulder is chasing Indy.
For reference you can hear the original sound below.
Obviously the rathtar scene is not yet online, but you can certainly imagine how it all fits together.
Also interesting from that same interview is that the sounds made when Kylo Ren is using the force is a kitten meowing slowed down, and some of the characters in Maz Kanata’s bar were made using baby noises and parrots slightly processed and distorted.
So, there you have it. Harrison Ford outrunning a giant object while sounds from Raiders of the Lost Ark play behind him. It’s almost like they should make another Indiana Jones movie...
