There's a phenomenon in Oklahoma that doesn't get talked about nearly enough.

Every town has a good Sonic.

And every town has a bad Sonic.

It doesn't matter if you're here in Lawton, OKC, Tulsa, or any of the tiny Oklahoma towns with more than one Sonic. Ask a local which is the best, and they'll answer without hesitation.

"The one on Lee Boulevard."

"The one on South 14th."

"The north side Sonic."

Everybody knows, and you'd be hard-pressed to find someone without a really strong opinion.

It's an odd Oklahoma flex, but it exists. It's also sort of hilariously ironic.

All Sonics are supposed to be the same. Same menu. Same drinks. Same burgers. Same tots... But there's always one location that makes better drinks. Better burgers. And always has the perfect ice.

Maybe the slushies always taste better at that one location, or you've managed to find the one Sonic in America that actually mixes the Sonic Blast candy all the way to the bottom of the cup. You know exactly what I'm talking about.

And on the other hand, there are the other Sonics.

You know how it goes... The speaker is hard to understand, the vanilla flavoring tastes sour, and the wait time is measured with a calendar.

I don't know if this phenomenon exists everywhere else in America, but it definitely exists here in the Sooner State.

Maybe it's because Sonic started here, and we have so many of them. Seriously, my tiny northern OK hometown has 3 Sonic locations. At four times the size, Lawton has just 4 locations... But in both towns, if you asked which one was the "best" Sonic, most people would give the same answer.

Shout out, Lee Boulevard!

Even when I'm back at home for the holidays, there are two Sonics between the family home and the "good" Sonic on the Southside of town... and the extra ten minutes of driving is worth every sip.

Even more weird, how can a "best" Sonic manage to keep up that reputation, especially over decades? You know there are constant changes in employees, carhops, cooks, management, etc... And on the same hand, the not-so-great Sonic's somehow keep their reputations for decades too, even though ownership has likely tried to turn the tide of opinion.

It's a very curious, very Oklahoma thing. It's like our own Sooner State folklore at this point.

The only real question left is, where is America's best Sonic?

I think it's fair to say that each state probably has its own legends when it comes to restaurants. Pennsylvania has cheesesteaks, New York has wings and pizza, Texas has Franklin BBQ and Tex-Mex, etc...

Oklahoma is no different.

Birthed into statehood as a cattle state, there's no shortage of beef on any menu here, but there's a little room for chicken and fries too. Here are the absolute, hands down, best restaurants, in no particular order, everyone has to try in The Sooner State.

While Oklahoma isn't often thought of as a culinary destination, it'll surprise you how many iconic dishes either came from or were perfected in this state.

Some of these dishes are wild, others are rare, and we finally settle the debate on what does and doesn't belong in chili.
