Oklahoma Fall Fishing Is About To Get Good

There are still a few more 100-degree days standing between us and fall in Oklahoma, but there are a handful of things to start getting excited about.

The OK State Fair, obviously. Oktoberfests are hitting calendars. Deer season opens October 1st. And fall fishing is about to kick off as soon as the daily high dips back into double digits.

We're in a weird place at the moment for fall fishing. The days are getting short, but it's still so hot. As much as it sucks to get forced off the lake by 10 AM lest we risk heat exhaustion, the warm water will mean an active bite longer into the season.

The fish are getting active in the shallows again, which is the funnest way to catch bass. Or, at least, the #1 fishing style of most anglers.

As the cold fronts start rolling through, the barometer starts bouncing around, and that gets fish moving again. And when they're moving, they're looking for something to eat.

When The Water Finally Starts Changing

They'll start pushing baitfish back up into shallower water and the points, shorelines, coves, and creek channels get hot again.

It's not just bass doing the chasing either. Sometimes you'll hook into a school of whites or hybrids too. As hard as they fight, literally to the death, it's also some tasty fun.

Everybody Gets In On The Fall Bite

Crappie are still hanging around brush piles, standing timber, and deeper structure. The catfish crowd starts getting bites again too, if you don't mind the slime.

The funny thing is, we've spent so much of this summer complaining about how hot everything is that it might be what makes this fall so much fun. And when the air finally starts changing, the fish are going to respond to it.

You don't need to pick one particular Oklahoma lake to enjoy it either. We've got plenty of them, and they all have their own little personalities when the seasons change.

Once those first big cold fronts start showing up, the fish are going to be hungry, and that's when Oklahoma fishing starts getting good again.
