It may surprise you to learn that one of the most famous and recognizable movie props of all time was created right here in the Sooner State. Not just any old prop, the legendary leg lamp from "A Christmas Story" was invented by an Oklahoma man. That's right the major award was first imagined and built by an Okie.

So who is this mystery man who created one of the single greatest props and lamps in the history of Hollywood, or better yet mankind? He was born in Chickasha, OK. If you've never heard of him before his name is Nolan James. He was a professor at the Oklahoma University School of Visual Arts.

Nolan created a funny and unusual lamp using mannequin legs and a shade that was in his office. It was a big hit and everyone always commented on it. One man was particularly interested in the lamp and would regularly visit James' office to see and study the lamp. Later that same man ended up on the production team for "A Christmas Story." Sadly Mr. James passed away in 2020 but his legacy and memory will certainly live on thanks to his hometown of Chickasha, OK. They're keeping his memory alive in a very big way.

If you haven't heard the news there's a 50-plus-foot tall leg lamp in Chickasha, OK. It's located on 1st Street near the old train depot and remains up and on display all year long. Most say it's "Indescribably beautiful and reminds them of the 4th of July."
