Did you know there's a cemetery in Oklahoma that has an entire section named Showmen's Rest that is the final resting place for circus performers? You'll find it in Hugo, Oklahoma at the Mount Olivet Cemetery.

If that sounds somewhat familiar this same cemetery also has a section called Bull Riders Repeieve where Lane Frost is buried along with Warren "Freckles" Brown and several other famous rodeo legends.

Back in the 1940s Hugo, OK. was known as Circus Town USA and was a very popular place where circuses would headquarter throughout the winter months, or whenever they weren't traveling around the country.

Even to this day, there are circus performers and big top entertainers in Hugo, OK. you may even catch a glimpse of routines and practices if you make the trip. It was also a popular wintering site for rodeos.

The Showmen's Rest section of Mount Olivet Cemetery was purchased by D.R. Miller back in 1960 after his brother Kelly Miller passed away. He wanted to not only honor his late brother, he extended it to all circus performers and entertainers. To this day there are circus performers that are laid to rest in this cemetery.

Throughout the years additional donations have been given to ensure proper headstones and burials to any circus performers that may not have other family members or the means to pay for a final resting place.

There are stone monuments of elephants that have the inscription Showmen's Rest on their bases that mark the boundaries of the section in the cemetery where circus performers have been buried at Mount Olivet.
