One of my favorite things about Oklahoma is how often it surprises people.

Not in the sense of the politics or hot topics that often put the Sooner State in headlines, but in watching someone discover something new about this place they've lived for so long.

Case in point, I've lived in Lawton and explored the Wichita Mountains for something like 13 years... and I've only recently discovered the Sharon's Gardens area of the refuge.

Discoveries like that happen all the time across Oklahoma, mainly because most Okies do the same thing when it comes to blowing off steam and relaxing.

When it comes time for a family trip or a weekend getaway, people outside of OKC and Tulsa head into the big cities to have their fill of entertainment.

Alternatively, people who live in OKC and Tulsa opt for one of two different options. By far the most common R&R trend for city folk is to hop a plane or hit the highway to a different destination.

Texas and Missouri are really common Sooner State vacation destinations, and Florida beach life is a close third... But there is a small population of city-dwellers who like to explore the lesser-known wild luxuries of our own state. Places you'd never expect to find here.

It's understandable though. If you lived 99% of your life on the dry plains near Woodward, OKC would be a very different and exciting place for a few days.

I think we all tend to suffer from a similar illusion that all of Oklahoma looks like where we live in Oklahoma. Granted, if you could wake up and have your morning coffee looking at the Wichita Mountains like me, you might expect the rest of the state to be a giant letdown.

It's not.

Oklahoma's Beauty Is Different For Everyone

I'll be honest with you, as much as I love looking at the mountains, my favorite spot to sit and just chill in the whole state is off the side of one particular dirt county road in Harmon County. During a specific couple of weeks around the winter holidays, the way the landscape rolls up to touch the sky, it becomes this seemingly endless vista of emerald green wheat, and nothing else, as far as you can see.

Those kinds of places are scattered all over Oklahoma, and some of them might surprise you.

You may have to get off the beaten path to really find the beauty across Oklahoma, but believe me, it's worth every moment.

Too many people spend too much time complaining about being in Southwest Oklahoma. If only they'd shut their mouths and open their eyes (and camera app) from time to time, then they'd see the true beauty of this place.
