What exactly is a King Cake?

King Cakes is a type of brioche and are a blend of a coffee cake and a cinnamon roll. Some are sometimes filled with cream cheese or fruit. It's typically enjoyed during Carnival season up until Mardi Gras. The cake represents the three kings that delivered gifts to baby Jesus.

King Cakes are shaped like crown and feature yellow, green and purple icing or sprinkles. The cake also features a surprise, usually a plastic baby. If you get the baby in your slice, you're granted luck and prosperity and you either have to provide the King Cake at next year's gathering or throw a big party.
