Lawton Has Been Presented an OK. Healthy Community Award!

Lawton, Fort Sill is now a five time winner of the Oklahoma Excellence Certified Healthy Community award or certification. The award recognizes Oklahoma communities, businesses and organizations that are working to make their cities a better and healthier place to live and work. There's several different categories in the certified healthy awards and Lawton, Fort Sill had winner's across the board!

Lawton, Fort Sill itself was named as a 2020 Oklahoma certified healthy community. This will make the fifth time we've won this award. We won in 2015, 2017, 2018, 2019 and no 2020. It's quite an accomplishment. This year over 30 local entities were identified and awarded a healthy certification. To qualify for the award the community and the businesses and or organizations must provide opportunities to residents to assist in making healthier life choices and behaviors. There are three levels to the awards from basic, merit to excellent.

Included in the categories for the Oklahoma Excellence Certified Healthy Community certifications are: certified healthy community, certified health businesses, certified healthy campus, certified healthy congregation, certified health school, certified healthy early childhood program. There are more categories, but these are the ones Lawton, Fort Sill won for 2020.

We've come a long way in making our community healthier over the past couple of years. From more options when it comes to fitness and outdoor activities to greater choices in dinning and the availability of fresh foods and farmer's markets. We've also reduced our obesity rates, diabetes and tobacco dependency quite a bit over the past few years. Lawton, Fort Sill is becoming a much healthier place to live, work and play!
