Lawton Says Farewell to the Man in the Red Shirt Lanny Edwards
Funeral services for Lanny Edwards will be today at First Baptist Church, 2pm. Edwards who passed away on Friday will be remembered by many as the Man in the Red Shirt. That shirt being the staff shirt at both the Devils Bowl Speedway in Mesquite, Texas, and here at the Lawton Speedway.
Lanny Edwards was a great man who did more for dirt track racing in this area than arguably anyone else. He bought the Lawton Speedway in 1961 and promoted races all over Oklahoma and Texas.
Awarded Regional Promoter of the year several times, he was National Promoter of the year in 2002, inducted into the National Sprint Car Hall of Fame in 2006, and into the Texas Motor Sports Hall of Fame in 2012 to name just a few of the accolade that Lanny Edwards earned. I say earned, because he worked hard for the sport that he loved. And he was in turn loved by many. He will be inducted into the Amarillo Motorsports Hall of Fame in 2017.
