Oklahoma Could Shift To a More Active Weather Pattern Next Week
So far, December has been a chilly month for Oklahoma! But it looks like temperatures could become more mild by next week and may bring the state back into a more active weather pattern.
The weather for the last few weeks in Oklahoma has been relatively quiet with a lot of chilly temperatures. These quiet weeks have been more than welcome to Oklahomans as the first few weeks of November reached historic levels with the weather. During the month of November, Oklahoma had 31 confirmed tornadoes, which nearly tripled the month's previous record of 12 tornadoes that was set in 1958.
November's tornado count brought the state's yearly tornado count up to 145 which is only four away from the state's record that was set in 2019 at 149 tornadoes for the year. According to an article from Oklahoma Energy Today, this year's November tornadoes came in two waves.
The first came Nov. 2-4 with three EF3 tornadoes and one EF2. These tornadoes proved to be the most violent of the month by damaging nearly 384 structures and causing at least 50 reported injuries.
The second wave struck on Nov. 18 in southwest Oklahoma and were less violent and damaging then those at the first of the month. But that day added nine more tornadoes to the month's total.
An active weather pattern could return to Oklahoma mid-December.
It's not uncommon for Oklahoma to see tornadoes in the fall and winter. Although spring is the prime time for tornadoes, Oklahoma can see tornadoes every month of the year. KFOR Chief Meteorologist Mike Morgan posted on his official Facebook page earlier this week that an active weather pattern could return to Oklahoma in mid-December.
In his posts, he states that during the first two weeks of November a "Southern Branch" was dominant. Right now, he indicated that a "Northern Branch" continues to be dominant over Oklahoma but a "Southern Branch" is set to return to Oklahoma sometime in the middle of next week.
Temperatures set to increase in Oklahoma by mid-December.
Although Oklahoma has had multiple cold fronts that brought temperatures down to winter, by next week, Oklahoma could start to feel a little bit warmer before another cold front comes through.
