An arctic blast is projected to bring bitter cold temperatures to Oklahoma this weekend and the arctic air is expected to extend into next week. Southwest Power Pool (SPP), Oklahoma's electric grid, has issued a weather advisory ahead of the frigid temperatures.

According to an article from Oklahoma Energy Today, the weather advisory from SPP has been issued for all 14 states that make up the power grid. The advisory is effective from 3 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 19 to 6 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 21. The advisory does not require the public to conserve energy. The advisory is intended to "raise awareness of potential threats to reliability among entities responsible for operating transmission and generation facilities."

SPP expects the upcoming arctic blast to have a "higher than normal demand for electricity, gas interruptions and equipment failure."

Daytime temperatures in Oklahoma will be below freezing this weekend and into next week.

Freezing temperatures can have a big effect on power and water supply, and Oklahoma will have several days of freezing temperatures starting Saturday, Jan. 18. According to the National Weather Service in Norman, daytime highs will fall near or below freezing for much of the state Sunday through Tuesday.
