For a kid, there may be nothing more depressing than the first advertisements for back-to-school sales, which remind them that their summer vacation won’t last forever.

The only thing more depressing for parents may be the cost of sending their little ones back to a new classroom.

According to a PriceGrabber survey of 1,509 parents, 63 percent said their back-to-school budget could go up to $500. Twenty percent answered their limit fell somewhere between $500 and $1,000, and 18 percent said they have no set budget.

According to the respondents, the most popular back-to-school item is general school supplies – like pencils and notebooks — which 83 percent expect to buy. That is followed by new clothing (79 percent), backpacks (51 percent), and then books (50 percent.)

This year, 79 percent said they plan on doing at least some of their back-to-school shopping online, which is up from 69 percent in 2011.
