Ryder Cup Attendees Demonstrate How Not To Act at The 2032 PGA Championship In Tulsa
Tulsa's Southern Hills will host the PGA Championship in 2032. This will not be the first time Oklahoma has played host to a major golf tournament, but based on the recent actions by U.S. fans at the biennial Ryder Cup in Farmingdale, New York, Oklahoma fans will have ample time to learn from the poor etiquette displayed at this weekend's tournament against Europe.
The Ryder Cup is a biennial tournament between the United States and Europe. Each country takes turn hosting the tournament. The 2025 Ryder Cup took place over the weekend at the Bethpage Black Course in Farmingdale, New York, and Europe's victory was made more celebratory due to inexcusable behavior by U.S. fans.
U.S. fans berated Europe golfers with foul language and destructive actions.
Videos from the Ryder Cup began circulating on social media over the weekend showing U.S. fans yelling obscenities at the European golfers, including titular players Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry.
U.S. fans shouted abusive language at the European players, like "F*** YOU," and performed unacceptable behavior during the tournament, like making noise in the middle of back swings. At one point, McIlroy's wife was struck by a fan's airborne drink.

McIlroy has always been a celebrated player in the United States.
McIlroy has six Ryder Cup wins under his belt. He has also had success in various U.S. tournaments, including winning the PGA Championship twice and most recently, he won his first Masters tournament this spring.
McIlroy has always been a celebrated player in the U.S. and not just in his home state of Ireland. He's an incredible player and has always had kind things to say about U.S. tournaments, courses and fans. So for McIlroy to have this hateful experience during the Ryder Cup in America is baffling and undeserving.

McIlroy responded that golf should be held to a 'higher standard.'
In a press conference following Europe's Ryder Cup win, he responded to the abuse he experienced at this year's tournament, which has never been endured at the tournament before. He stated that "there was a lot of language that was unacceptable and abusive behavior."
At first, McIlroy tried to brush off the behavior from the U.S. fans by either smiling and waving or blowing a kiss. But eventually, the behavior became too much. McIlroy could be seen responding "F*** YOU" back to some U.S. fans. And Lowry stood up for his teammate by pointing out disorderly fans and having them thrown out.

Despite his moments of impulse, McIlroy believed him and his teammates did the best they could to handle everything with "class and poise." But regardless, McIlroy believes that none of the behavior exhibited at this year's Ryder Cup should be accepted, especially on the golf course.
"I think golf should be held to a higher standard than what was seen out there this week," McIlroy said in a press release after the Ryder Cup. "Golf has the ability to unite people. Golf teaches you very good life lessons. It teaches you etiquette. It teaches you how to play by the rules. It teaches you how to respect people. Sometimes this week, we didn't see that. So no, this should not be what is acceptable in the Ryder Cup."

Oklahoma course selected for PGA Championship because of 'neighborly hospitality.'
Despite its faults, Oklahoma has always been known for its kind residents and the "Oklahoma Standard," which was coined in 1995 after the Oklahoma City Bombing. The Oklahoma Standard is embodied by three core values of service to others, honoring victims and kindness to others without expecting anything in return.
When the PGA announced that Southern Hills Country Club in Tulsa would host the 2032 PGA Championship, the PGA President of America stated that the course in Tulsa was chosen because the community has always welcomed the PGA Championship, its staff and its players with "authentic, neighborly hospitality."
A stark contrast to what the European players endured at the Ryder Cup.
Tulsa's Southern Hills Country Club is the first course in PGA Championship history to host the tournament more times than any other course, and based on the quote from the PGA President of America, that partly could be because of the way Oklahoma residents have treated the organization and its players.
So in 2032, if fans in Oklahoma behave the way New York fans behaved at the Ryder Cup, they could almost guarantee that the state may never see another PGA Championship.
