It's almost Memorial Day weekend, and that is a sign in Oklahoma that summer is almost here! Oklahoma historically has seen extremely hot summers and this year may be no different. The extreme heat not only causes stress on residents but also their energy bills. But the recommended thermostat temperature may still be too hot for most Oklahomans.

Memorial Day weekend is expected to be rainy with a few storms here and there but daytime temperatures won't be too hot. With energy costs still on the rise, several Oklahomans will be looking for ways to save money on cooling their homes this summer.

Other ways to safe on energy costs this summer.

As well as setting your thermostat at 78 degrees, energy experts suggest using other methods of keeping your home cool this summer.

  • Prevent heat gain with window coverings
  • Turn off ceiling fans when leaving a room
  • Remove heat and humidity with bathroom fans
  • Increase your thermostat by seven to 10 degrees when you're not at home

And before summer starts, homeowners are encouraged to schedule an HVAC maintenance and to check around their house for air leaks and sealing them.
