‘The Voice': Gracee Shriver Delivers Kacey Musgraves’ ‘Rainbow’
The Voice Season 17 continued Monday night (Oct 14) with the final blind auditions, in which returning coaches Blake Shelton, Kelly Clarkson and John Legend, as well as returning alum Gwen Stefani, finalized their teams. The second half of the show introduced the Battle Rounds, which features contestants going head-to-head and also receiving instruction from special guest star mentors.
The beginning of the show was all dedicated to the coaches rounding out their teams, which left some of the contestants a bit at loose ends. One who managed to fare quite well was 16-year-old Gracee Shriver, who hails from Oklahoma and has been honing her pipes at "a little barbecue restaurant" in her hometown.
"This is absolutely the biggest stage I've ever been on. Being so young, this is a jump-start to something that I've always wanted to do," she explained.
Shriver gave the coaches a rendition of Kacey Musgraves' "Rainbow," which had both Clarkson and Stefani spinning their chairs.
"I'm from Oklahoma too...kind of," crowed Stefani, who has been spending quite a bit of time in the state due to her boyfriend, Shelton. "This is meant to be, honestly. Right, Blake? I think so. He is from Oklahoma, and I go to Sooners,
I go to Ole Red, I go to Lake Texoma, I go on the pontoon boat.."
Clarkson took an amused but practical tack, asking Shriver what kind of music she is interested in performing. When Shriver admitted she liked country, and that she liked Clarkson's touring opening act Kelsea Ballerini, Clarkson cooly threw in her arrow: "I'm not dating Blake, but my husband manages him."
Shriver made her decision to go with Clarkson, which had the superstar giddy. " She sounds like old-school country, and it sounds authentic."
