In what seems to be a pretty random bit of information on a topic most people don't think about, there is a debate happening right now about school start times across Oklahoma, and some are pushing hard to get them to change.

A teachers group called the OKCPS Trailblazers have proposed changes to school start times, asking for an earlier start for elementary students, and a later start for middle and high school students.

The OKCPS district has responded with their concerns of why it wouldn't be possible, but the long and short of is, some teachers feel it necessary to allow the older students more quality sleep, thus improving overall education, and it's hard to argue.

The whole story can actually be found here at nondoc.com, but what do you think as a parent?

While my personal high school experience is somewhat of a blur, I do remember my freshman year of college. I was stupid enough to elect a 7 AM class that first semester. While I wanted to quit every time I had to wake up while it was still dark to make it on time, I stuck it out for the three months it took to complete.

Going into my sophomore year, I smartened up a little bit. I picked classes that would allow me to start at 10 AM and wrap up by the end of the day. As a massive stroke of luck, I've been able to make it nearly twenty years on that same schedule. There was a time where the worst boss I ever had made me adjust everything an hour earlier for a year or two before I quit being her employee, but even to this day, I start work at 10 AM. I feel pretty fortunate.

It's true, it's not an idealistic schedule for most. I come in a little later than others, but I also work a little later than others. The positions I've sought out professionally from company to company justify it.

The point is, I feel I can speak about this with a little authority as I've experienced this in my adulthood. On the face of the proposed changes, some people see it as a way to allow more sleep for the older students who are developing into later-night personalities. Most adults are late-nighters at some point whether it's a buzzing social life, a little quiet time after the kids have gone to bed, or just allowing yourself to get lost in a project around the house, most adults don't keep those early to bed, early to rise hours by choice.

Most people live by perception, and it's human nature to associate perception to ones reality... ie - "I go to bed at 8 PM and wake up at 4 AM, anybody should be able to do the same thing." That sentiment is no different than saying "I like peanuts to everyone should like peanuts." That's not how life works. Just like not every high school student is a late-night person... but I would agree that starting high school later in the morning might see an improved scholastic performance overall.

If you've ever woken up to one of your creepy kids silently standing over you at 5 AM ready to take on the day, you might agree that an earlier start for the little kids is probably a good idea also.

It's a good old-fashioned flip-flop, and the debate will soon reach your dining room table. Might as well start thinking about it now.
