Western Oklahoma May Get Its First Frost This Week
A Pacific cold front will blow through Oklahoma this week, and it could finally bring in the first frost of the season for western Oklahoma. The cold front is expected to arrive late Tuesday into Wednesday morning, which could help make favorable conditions for frost in western Oklahoma.
Areas of northern Oklahoma have already received their first frost of the season. On Oct. 16, temperatures in northern Oklahoma dropped below 32 degrees. And on Nov. 10, areas of northwestern Oklahoma received their first frost of the season following a giant snow storm in Oklahoma's panhandle. Cimarron county was in a winter storm warning for most of Thursday and Friday last week. The area received over eight inches of snow over the course of two days.
Frost chances expected in Oklahoma on Thursday, Nov. 14.
It looks like Oklahoma will continue cooling down this week. As the Pacific cold front moves through Oklahoma late Tuesday, it will also bring in evening storm chances in western Oklahoma. The cold front will continue to move through Wednesday morning and rain is expected to continue.
After the cold front moves through, conditions are expected to be favorable for patchy morning frost on Thursday, Nov. 14. Patchy frost is expected across parts of western and northern Oklahoma. Any frost that develops will mostly be on grassy areas and patchy in coverage.
First frost of the season has been delayed for most of Oklahoma.
The panhandle and northern Oklahoma received their first frost of the season this year by their average date, of Oct. 15, according to the Farmers' Almanac. But other areas of Oklahoma are still waiting on their first frost. The Farmers' Almanac averages expect most of Oklahoma to have its first frost of the way by the end of October.
Oklahoma did have a warmer than average and dryer than average October. This year, Oklahoma barely received an inch of rain during the entire month of October, making it the ninth driest October in Oklahoma's history. So it's no wonder the frost has been delayed for much of Oklahoma. Hopefully this cooling trend continues in Oklahoma and the rest of the state gets their fist frost!
