Jonah Mowry is an 8th grader. At this time of year, the only things he should be worried about are new sneakers and book bags. But instead he is concerned with bullies and cutting. There are just certain things a kid should never have to be concerned with.

At this time of year, kids around the country are preparing to go back to school, which means we will have less time to spend with our children and our grandchildren. We will have less time to listen to their concerns and help them to find solutions to problems which seem enormous to young people, who haven't developed the coping skills that are learned later in life.

Every day life sometimes overwhelms us all. Sometimes as parents, we have to work long hours, sometimes more than one job just to make ends meet. We know the toll it takes on us working these hours to survive, but we forget to take into account the effect it has on the littlest ones in our life.

Take the time every day to talk to your kids and grand kids about what is going on in their lives. Help them find correct ways to deal with stress, frustration, alienation and loneliness. As adults, we don't always have the right answers, but maybe, you can help find them together.

For some kids, returning to school is a happy event. For others, its a return to a daily nightmare of torment, abuse and bullying. No child should be afraid. No child should entertain thoughts of shelf abuse and suicide. Put down that cell phone, walk away from that computer and turn off that television. Take time to be a family, so you can stay a family.
