Today we turn our focus to an artist who has been a mainstay on the Texas music charts for the past few years, and who may finally be making some inroads in Nashville. An artist that who, despite a lack of success in Nashville so far, saw his most recent album debut at #2 on the Billboard Country Albums chart.

Cody Johnson has been singing and playing guitar since he was 12 years old. At 19 he formed the Cody Johnson Band, which featured Cody on guitar and vocals, his father Carl on bass and drummer Nathan Reedy. After recording the album Black and White Label in 2006, the band added lead guitarist Matt Rogers and recorded a live album, Live and Rocking in 2007. After the album was released, Carl Johnson left the band and was replaced by Danny Salinas.

The new line-up released their first locally successful album in 2009. Six Strings, One Dream featured three top-10 hits on the Texas music chart. After the album was released, the group added Chris Whitten on fiddle and Jeff Smith on lead guitar, with Whitten soon replaced by Joey Bartula. The group's next album, 2011's A Different Day, was produced by songwriter Trent Willmon, and it led to Johnson being named the Best New Male Vocalist by the Texas Regional Music Awards. After winning the award, he left his full-time job as a corrections officer with the Texas Department of Criminal to concentrate on music full time.

In 2014, Johnson released his second Willmon produced album, Cowboy Like Me, which sold more than 8,000 copies its first week, landing it at #7 on the Country Albums chart. The title track, as well as two more singles from the project landed at the top of the Texas Music chart. It's follow-up, 2016's Gotta Be Me, debuted at #2 on the Country Albums chart, selling 23,000 copies in its first week, and featured another Texas chart-topper, the single "With You I Am", which peaked at #46 on the Billboard Country Singles chart, Johnson's first visit to that chart.
