Today's focus turns to an artist whose original plans included bones and x-rays, not boots and guitars. And while he started playing guitar when he was just 8 years old, he soon after set it down and didn't pick it back up until he was 15 years old.

Tullahoma, Tennessee native Dustin Lynch took an untraditional road to Nashville. While he always had music in his heart, a C in a high school music class convinced him not to put all of his eggs in one basket. Even though he would play open mic nights at  Nashville night spots while still in high school, a 28 score on his MCAT college entrance exams garnered him a lot of interests from several colleges. Lynch accepted a golf scholarship to Lipscomb University, where he studied Biology & Chemistry, earning his bachelor's degree in biology in 2007. But all the time he was at L.U., he continued to nurture his musical side, admitting that the reason he choose Lipscomb is because of its proximity to the legendary Blue Bird Cafe in Nashville, where he made his on-stage debut at 16 years old.

But even though he was interested in going to medical school, Lynch decided to pursue his musical interests. Originally signed by the Valory Music Group in 2009, he

moved to Broken Bow Records in 2011, when the executive that signed him at Valory joined BBR. His debut single was released by Broken Bow in January of 2012. "Cowboys and Angels" soared to #2 on the Billboard Country Singles chart, serving as the lead for Lynch's self-titled debut album which was released in August of that year. Two more top-20 hits followed, showing Lynch that his decision to forgo medical school was the right one.

Lynch's second album, 2014's Where It's At started a great run for Lynch. The album featured three straight #1 singles, including the album's title track, which became his very first chart topping hit. The single also became Lynch's second platinum single, while the other two, "Hell Of A Night" and "Mind Reader" were each certified gold.

In July of 2016, in preparation for his third album, Lynch released "Seein' Red", which would become his fourth straight #1 single. Little information has been released about the upcoming album, including the title or targeted release date. But what has been released is the album's second single, which is in our spotlight today. Dustin Lynch and "Small Town Boy" is today's Catch of the Day, new music you haven't heard, but you'll wanna hear it again.
