‘Catch of the Day’ – Josh Thompson – “Same Ol’, Plain Ol’ Me” [AUDIO]
Today's spotlight falls on a singer and songwriter who has written songs for Brad Paisley, Jason Aldean and Jason Michael Carroll.
Josh Thompson came to music relatively late in life. He originally worked construction, following in his father's footsteps, pouring concrete from the age of 12. But Thompson veered from the blue-collar path when he got his first guitar at age 21. Soon after, the musical influences of his youth took hold, and his life's journey began to take form.
Thompson made the move to Nashville in 2005 to become a full-time songwriter. His first success as a songwriter was the title track of Jason Michael Carroll's debut album, "Growing Up Is Getting Old", while the first song Thompson ever wrote, "Church Pew or Bar Stool" would be picked up by Jason Aldean for his My Kinda Party album. On the strength of these songs, Columbia Records Nashville signed Thompson to a recording contract, his debut album Way Out Here released by the label in 2010. The album offered two top-20 singles, “Beer On The Table” and “Way Out Here”, along with a third single “Won’t Be Lonely Long”.
After the first album, Thompson and Miranda Lambert were transferred from Columbia Nashville to sister label RCA Nashville. Josh recorded the single "Comin' Around" for the label, but, dissatisfied with the direction RCA was taking with him, he left the label in July of 2012. He would sign with Show Dog-Universal Music in 2013, releasing the album Turn It Up in April of 2014. The album's first single "Cold Beer With Your Name On It" would crack the top-30, while the second single from the project "Wanted Me Gone" stalled early, climbing on to #44 on the charts.
After corporate restructuring, Thompson left Show Dog earlier this year. He announced in August that the album he had been working when he left RCA would be released as a pair of EPs. The first, entitled Change: The Lost Record, Volume 1, was released October 9th, with a follow up scheduled for 2016. Today we feature the first single from Volume 1 as our Catch of the Day. Josh Thompson and "Same Ol', Plain Ol' Me" is new music you haven't heard, but you'll want to hear it again.
