Independence Day; Fourth of July; freedom.  They all have a common thread.  If it were not for our founding fathers, we would all be drinking tea, eating crumpets, driving on the wrong side of the road and watching the BBC. But gratefully the men, most who paid dearly for freedom, have caused this day to be one of happiness and excitement.  One filled with family get-togethers , picnics, Barbque's,  fun outdoor activities and, of course, fireworks.

So with that said, I searched around our piece of the world in SW Oklahoma to find out where you and your family can have fun this Fourth of July.

Marlow Oklahoma

The community wide Independence Day celebration started in "Marlow Grove" on July 4, 1892. and continues to this day.

Simple beginnings including dancing and beef donated by ranchers and an open pit BBQ was enjoyed by the community and a feast was shared.

This year as in years past, The 4th of July Celebration will kick off at 9:15 with a parade which will include floats, horses, antique autos, tractors, Shriners Clowns and much more. Marlow Chamber of Commerce is the sponsor of this parade.

The Parade leads to a full day of events for all ages in Redbud Park with arts and crafts, game booths, rides and food of all kinds.  People will come and go all day long and enjoy the great entertainment.

At 10pm the grand finale will start with one of the biggest fireworks displays in Stephens county and will be enjoyed by thousands in the park, from back yards even from cars lining the roads In Marlow.  And since the city of Duncan has canceled their fireworks for the 4th of July, more people will be heading north to celebrate with our neighbors.

There are many other small communities that will have events on 4th of July. Many will have that "small town" atmosphere like community picnics, baseball games, fun for kids and adults alike. No matter where you choose to spend your 4th of July, ensure that you pause and give thanks for the freedom we all enjoy. Then give thanks for the men and women protecting our country so we can enjoy this day. And above all else if you are going to do your own fireworks, BE SAFE.
