Heavy, Wet Snow Possible In Oklahoma This Weekend

Those who have lived in Oklahoma long enough know that even though it may be spring, winter can be a last appearance in April! Across Oklahoma this weekend, people could see freezing temperatures and bouts of heavy, wet snow.

Oklahoma has had a few days of severe weather and thunderstorms to kick off April. Several areas have already seen heavy rain, damaging wind gusts, big hail and tornadoes. As Oklahoma continues in its latest wet pattern, it's looking like temperatures may get low enough this week to produce some snow.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, more rounds of showers, thunderstorms and heavy rain will move through Oklahoma. The first system is expected to begin around midnight Friday and last through the early hours of Saturday through 6 a.m. Mostly rain is expected in northwest Oklahoma, while thunderstorms could impact central, southwest and southern Oklahoma.

A final round of precipitation is expected Saturday night and this is when Oklahoma could see some heavy, wet snow. Rain could transition to snow late Saturday evening through early Sunday morning. But warm ground temperatures are expected to keep snow from accumulating.

How much snow will Oklahoma get?

Even if much snow doesn't accumulate this weekend, Oklahoma could still have historic snowfall for April. According to the Oklahoma Mesonet, in recorded history, Tulsa has only seen snow four times in April and Oklahoma City has seen snow in April seven times.

Early predictions are expecting some areas of northwest Oklahoma to see up to three inches of snow Saturday. Areas of central and southwest Oklahoma may only see a dusting of snow this weekend.
