I'm going out on a limb to assume you have an average understanding of an embassy. After all, we've all seen countless Hollywood spy movies--like the Jason Bourne series--where embassies play right into the story.

Sometimes they're the savior of the main character, shielding them from trouble in a foreign nation... other times the embassy staff is on the offensive trying to track down your protagonist.

We're on the same page, right? Here's a wild fact... Oklahoma is home to 11 embassy extensions of countries from all over the world.

Not embassies, exactly...

Ready for the Wikipedia technical jargon? They're not actually "embassies," but rather "consulates."

What's the difference? The embassy of a country is where the ambassador and foreign delegation are... They work directly for their nation. Consulates work for the embassy.

If this were 17th-century Japan, the embassy would be the Shogun, and the consulates would be the feudal lords delegating order throughout the country.

Why does Oklahoma have consuls?

That is a fair question. We're far from Washington politics, almost landlocked in the "heart of America." Why would any foreign nation want a presence here?

Beats me too.

Weirdly, there are a few different types of consulates here in Oklahoma.

Some are "consulate generals" who work in diplomatic embassy capacity. There are a few regular consulates the do more day-to-day paperwork for their foreign citizens--passports, visas, etc... There are also a handful of "honorary" consuls that seem to do it all of the above, but on a non-official part-time basis depending on where you Google that at.

Here's the list.

Foreign Embassy Locations in Oklahoma

As wild as it seems, Oklahoma is home to a few extension offices (consulates) of foreign embassies from around the world. Some of them are located here in an official capacity--to aid their own citizens in terms of passports, visas, etc... and others are within the Sooner State on an "honorary" basis.

Cities with the Worst Drivers

Nobody is sure why, but fatal accidents are on the rise these last few years. Chalk it up to having too many distractions, or perhaps it's a side-effect of letting one's ego pull into offensive mode, but fatalities are up a whopping 10% since 2020 according to Forbes. Here's the rundown on the top twenty cities with the worst drivers based on fatal accidents.

Oklahoma's Most Liberal Cities

Politics in Oklahoma seem to make headlines every election cycle. We're known as "the most conservative state" in the nation, but the reality doesn't always reflect that. By the statistics, when you see how voters vote, the Sooner State is split pretty evenly right up the middle-ish. While every county is majority Republican, here are the "most liberal" cities in the state.

Commonly Used Phrases That Are Historically Racist

You'd have to look long and far to find an example of someone using these as they were originally intended today. As they were first coined to oppress, they've become universally accepted as ordinary, everyday greetings and phrases in this modern day.
