Record Highs and Supercells Possible In Oklahoma On Christmas Day
It's been a wild weather year for Oklahoma, and it's no surprise that the weather on Christmas Day will be anything but calm and normal. Oklahoma is expected to have record highs on Christmas Day and possible storms that could develop supercells.
For the past few weeks, local meteorologists have been struggling to pin down the exact weather possibilities for Oklahoma on Christmas Days. One moment, the models show dry and mild conditions on Christmas, and then the next day models would show temperatures below freezing and snowing.
Now that we're a week out from Christmas, more precise predictions for the weather on Christmas can be determined. Most models are leaning towards a mild/warm Christmas with temperatures above average. So on Christmas Day, Oklahoma could see temperatures above 60 degrees.
Warm temperatures and severe storms possible in Oklahoma on Christmas Day.
As we get closer to Christmas, some meteorologists are starting to notice that severe storm development is possible. KFOR Chief Meteorologist Mike Morgan posted on his official Facebook page on Tuesday, Dec. 17 predicting record high temperatures on Christmas Day in Oklahoma and the production of supercells.
Oklahoma has had dangerous tornadoes in December.
Oklahomans know supercells all too well since they are typically dangerous thunderstorms with the potential to produce tornadoes. And it's not uncommon for Oklahoma to experience tornadoes in December. Since 1950, Oklahoma has had 38 confirmed tornadoes.
According to the National Weather Service in Norman, of the 38 December tornadoes, two are unrated, 18 were an EF0 to EF1 and 18 were an EF2 to an EF3. As of Tuesday, Dec. 17, Oklahoma hasn't had a confirmed tornado on Christmas Day but there were two confirmed tornadoes on Christmas Eve in 1982. So it's possible that Oklahoma could have a tornado on Christmas Day.
