Oklahoma State Fair Announced 2023’s New Weird Foods to Try
I don't quite remember when "fair food" came to be such an exciting thing, but I'd wager that Guy Fiery and his "Flavortown" shows had something to do with it.
Growing up we always went for the classics... Corn dogs, funnel cakes, and lemon ices. It wasn't until around 2010 that I remember the wild creations started making headlines. If fact, chocolate-covered bacon was the first odd fair food I remember.
Skip ahead a decade plus some, weird foods have become the #1 reason people show up to fairs these days, and the Oklahoma State Fair won't disappoint in 2023.
Here's a quick list. Some foods have pics, others are still food-truck-classified.
Pickle Pie
If you had a delicious pie in one hand, a delicious sour pickle in the other, and you put your hands together, you'd have the latest creation from Cutie Pies.
Meat Candy on a Stick
B-Ray's BBQ is putting a candied spin on a classic. Burnt ends on a stick glazed with sauce, sprinkled with graham cracker crust.
Candied Bacon on a Stick:
The evolution of bacon continues with Champions BBQ. Sweet and savory on a stick.
Mochi Donuts
Chan's Eatery has meshed the classic American donut with Japanese ingredients. Light, fluffy, and chewy all the same. This one will stand out for sure.
Cookie Dough Parfait
Cookie Dough Monsters sparked an idea to layer chocolate chip cookie dough into chocolate pudding with Oreo sprinkles and whipped cream on top.
Pina Colada Palmer
Oklahoma local A Latte Love has improved on the traditional Arnold Palmer with a coconutty spin.
Deep-Fried Caramel Apple Cow Tail
Say that five times fast... Pioneer Wagon's take on this has them taking a caramel apple Cow Tail candy, putting it on a stick, dredging it in a corn batter, frying it to perfection, and topping it with powdered sugar and a caramel drizzle.
MinneCookieDough Pie
The makers of the original MinneApple Fried Pie came up with a decadent idea... Stuff a fried pie with cookie dough, sprinkle with powdered sugar, and serve it with ice cream.
Country Clucker
One for adventurous eaters... FryDay Concessions has a warm glazed donut topped with a deep-fried Cajun (spicy) chicken thigh, drizzled with honey butter.
Paletas
A Mexican delicacy, paletas are frozen treats traditionally made with fresh fruits, but Pour & Co has evolved the flavors by using ingredients like coffee, pistachio, almonds, and caramel.
Jalapeno Cheddar Corndogs
A spicy twist on a fair classic. Lakeside Concessions corndogs have jalapeno and cheese on the inside. Spicy, savory goodness.
Freeze-Dried Jolly Ranchers
They may look like cotton candy, but Grams Sweet Treats is offering up light and fluffy freeze-dried Jolly Ranchers... the way our astronauts would have had 'em.
Korean Corndogs
Half hotdog, half mozzarella cheese, battered and deep-fried--topped with crunchies... They look amazing.
Oreo Brownie Blast
Call it a dessert corndog... It's a brownie dipped in Belgian waffle batter, deep-fried to perfection, topped with a white-chocolate drizzle and Oreo crumbles.
Ultimate Champ Dog
Champions BBQ has a second new menu item this year, the ultimate hotdog. It starts with a smoked gouda and Hatch chile sausage, topped with brisket, Hatch mac & cheese, fried onions, and BBQ sauce stuffed inside an artisan roll.
But wait, there's more!
