These Are The Years Oklahoma Saw The Most Tornadoes

In the new summer blockbuster "Twisters," the characters are gearing up for a massive tornado outbreak in Oklahoma. That plot of the movie isn't necessarily off base. Oklahoma has seen some of its biggest tornado outbreaks over that past couple of decades, and the possibility of more tornadoes in the years to come is expected to increase due to climate change.

The National Weather Service in Norman recently released its data for the number of tornadoes in 2024 so far. From January through mid-July, Oklahoma has seen 106 tornadoes. These numbers include two EF4 tornadoes, four EF3 tornadoes and the rest being EF2 and lower. This already makes 2024 the sixth most active tornado season since 1950, and the year isn't even over yet.

Tornado season is actually year round in Oklahoma.

Although spring time in Oklahoma is most known for tornadoes, Oklahoma can actually get tornadoes anytime throughout the year. Oklahoma has seen tornadoes as early as January and as late as December. Most tornadoes do occur from March to June, and Oklahoma has been known to have multiple tornadoes in October.

Since Oklahoma can receive tornadoes throughout the year, the state has had several years in storm tracking history with tornado counts well over 100. The National Weather Service in Norman has kept count and has the data for the number of tornadoes in Oklahoma for every year since 1950.
