The Lawton Great American Cookies in the Mall AKA Central Plaza is Closing Down
Well, it's looking like we'll be losing yet another business in the mall AKA Central Plaza. Pretty soon there won't be anything left, just empty spaces. We just heard the unfortunate news that the Lawton Great American Cookies will be closing sometime in March of 2022. Now not to get your hopes up, there's a slight chance that they may stay, but it's unlikely. It's sad that we're losing them and their awesome snacks.
It won't be the same going to the mall AKA Central Plaza and not grabbing a soft pretzel or cookie. A few days ago we announced that Chick-Fil-A in the mall was closing. As a matter of fact, they're closed now. Their final day in the mall was on New Year's Eve (12-31-21). When I went to the mall today I passed by there and it was being stripped and demoed. So we've lost Chick-Fil-A and now Great American Cookies.
As soon as I heard the rumor I headed to the mall to see if there was any truth to it and from what I was told, it's true. Great American Cookies will be leaving in March sometime. My plan is to stop by as much as possible while I still can and get as many cookies and pretzels as I can. They have the BEST soft pretzels around! Between now and March I'll eat as many of them as humanly possible, and then some.
More and more stores and restaurants are leaving the mall. There's a ton of open spaces and empty storefronts. It looks like around close to half the mall is empty. At this rate, I'm wondering once all the improvements are made and the new Central Plaza is a reality if there will be any businesses left. The City of Lawton now owns the mall, it was purchased a while back for a whopping 14.6 million dollars.
The ideal was that it would house the FISTA project and eventually they would completely remodel it to be kind of a strip mall and regular mall with both indoor and outdoor storefronts. You can click here to see the future plans and get all the details. I realize these types of things take time and we should expect some businesses to move or close, but this is starting to get ridiculous. It'll be years before the new Central Plaza is complete and these businesses will be long gone by then. There are even rumors of other stores leaving.
Hopefully some of them, better yet, all of them return once the project is completed. However, I seriously doubt that. I don't claim to be a financial wizard or expert on economic development, even so, I can't help but think the City of Lawton made a HUGE MISTAKE buying the mall, especially for 14.6 million. Maybe I don't see the big picture and that's entirely possible, I guess we'll have to wait and see...Hopefully I'm wrong.
