Today we turn our Unsigned/Indy Artist Thursday focus to an unlikely source, a small coastal town on the Oregon/California border, that is known more for its fishing than for country music. But sometimes the greatest treasures are found in the most unlikely of locations.

Brookings, Oregon is a small coastal Visit Sitetown, situated about halfway between Portland and Sacramento, CA. A town known primarily for its fishing industry, Brookings has produced an up-and-coming singer and songwriter, who hails from four generations of commercial fisherman, but their is nothing fishy about Jessie G.

Growing up in the small town of the Oregon/California line, Jessie G spent her younger years working with her father, either on small, hand-built boats, fishing for either Dungeness crab or Albacore tuna, or working the local market on the fishing docks. She learned the meaning of hard-work, a trait she has brought to her music career. She would listen to music while working with her family, finding her influences in country artists like Reba McEntire and The Dixie Chicks, blues rocker Janis Joplin and hard rockers like Aerosmith and Van Halen. Jessie formed her own band and spent her time away from the docks honing her unique Country/Rock style.

In the summer of 2013, Jessie got a break that most artists can only dream of. She entered a Battle of the Bands, with her eye on the prize: a shot at opening up for Grammy Award winner Gretchen Wilson. Destiny was on Jessie's side as not only did she win the contest and the opening slot, she found a friend and a mentor in Wilson, who found a diamond in the rough with the young performer, knowing that Jessie was a special talent the first time she heard her sing.

In 2014 Jessie G followed her mentor to Nashville and began writing with her aim at a debut album. Jessie began writing with not only Wilson, but also some of the best song writer's in Nashville. Wilson agreed to produce Jessie's first album, taking her into the studio and honing the Oregonian's rough edges until they shined. The result is a self-titled, debut album for Jessie G, due out in August, that shows off not only those early influences, but that has Wilson's finger prints all over it.

The first single from that debut album is in our spotlight today. Playing off her background in the commercial fishing industry, Jessie G and "Drop A Line" is our Unsigned/Indy Artist Thursday Catch of the Day, new music you haven't heard, but you'll want to hear it again.
