Growing up, I don't think there was a single house I can remember living in that didn't have a swimming pool. Some of my earliest memories are of my moms pools, like the time I got a few paddle swats from the school principal for skipping school at lunch only to be found swimming in our backyard. I was six, it was first grade, and the pro-wrestler sized principal wept. It also wasn't the first or last time I opted to take a midday dip playing hooky, a trend that lasted all the way through high school. I loved the pool just as much as my mother did. My father, on the other hand, does not.

I could probably count on one hand how many times I've seen my father take a dip in a pool. Odds are, there was some project we were working on around the house like building a new garage, putting up a fence, pouring concrete, etc... that eventually lead to his hopping in the cool water to cut off the heat exhaustion before it set in to stroke. He's a pro when it comes to managing the pool, has been since we built that big deck for the first above ground pool they installed in the 80's. Chemicals can be confusing, there's a learning curve, but he took that that technical stuff like a chemist in a lab. He also always referred to our pools as "A hole in the ground you throw money in." As I've matured into adulthood, I started to agree with him in my early twenties. All the same, it's hard not to notice an epic backyard oasis when you see one.

As you can see, while it's a little less colorful than you'd expect in a modern pool, primary colors and concrete colored concrete, this pool might be the best looking pool in the entire city. Built on the grade down to the pond, anchored by a hot tub, extended into a lounging area, views unobstructed, it looks pretty stellar.

If anything, this is a good reminder that while we all get dragged into thinking this city is just littered streets the city refuses to fix, corrupt city councils, pawn shops and fast food places, it's nice to see something so nice in our zip code.
