Oklahomans may have started to notice leaves falling from trees - one of the first signs that fall is on the way! But one of the best parts about fall, besides the cooler weather, is when the leaves turn shades of red, yellow and orange. The east coast isn't the only place that has breathtaking fall colors - Oklahoma has some beautiful fall foliage for autumn lovers to admire.

The first day of fall this year is Sept. 22 but it may be a month or more after that when Oklahoma starts to see fall colors.

When will Oklahoma start to see fall foliage?

American Forests, a nonprofit conservation organization in the United States, hosts an interactive fall foliage prediction map. For 2024, the prediction map sees States in the northern parts of the nation start to have fall foliage starting in September. But Oklahoma may not start see the leaves change colors until mid October.

By Oct. 23, most of all of Oklahoma will start to see minimal and patchy fall foliage. By Oct. 30, Oklahoma will start to see patchy and partial fall foliage. And once November arrives, Oklahoma will start to be at near peak and peak fall foliage.

Oklahoma has several great places to hike, ride on horseback or drive through fall foliage. And the American Forests interactive fall foliage prediction map can help you make plans to see the fall foliage at their peak in Oklahoma.

One of the best places to experience fall foliage in Oklahoma is the Talimena National Scenic Byway in southeast Oklahoma. Last year, peak foliage season for the Talimena National Scenic Byway was between Nov. 4-19.
