Oklahomans Remember Fellow Okie Toby Keith
Oklahoma woke up Tuesday morning with sad news that Toby Keith had passed away. Since the news broke, fellow Okies have been remembering the Oklahoma country music legend.
Toby Keith is an Oklahoma country music legend. Born in Clinton, Oklahoma, in 1961, he passed away Monday, Feb. 5, with his family in Moore, Oklahoma.
Toby Keith grew up in Moore, Oklahoma, and continued to live there even after achieving country music fame. When you drive through Moore, you can get a glimpse of the water tower that says "Home of Toby Keith." The City of Moore paid tribute to the late country star Tuesday morning.
And it wasn't just Moore that was proud of Toby Keith, all of Oklahoma are huge fans and supporters of the country music legend. So when the news broke of his passing, Oklahomans, some who are also country stars, mourned the loss of Toby Keith.
Carrie Underwood from Checotah, Oklahoma, said "a true blue cowboy just made his ride up to heaven."
Toby Keith was a known as a huge fan of the Oklahoma Sooners, and the university paid tribute to him Tuesday morning, referring to him as "a dear friend."
Throughout my career in radio, I've met several country stars, but it was always special meeting one from Oklahoma! I had met Toby Keith a few times but I'll never forget the first time. So today's news was especially sad.
Other Oklahomans have been remembering Toby Keith for the times they had met him as well or saw him at an OU game, out and about in Oklahoma or at one of his concerts. But Oklahomans will always have his music to remember him by. We asked our listeners what their favorite Toby Keith song is and most of them said "it's impossible to pick just one." Rest easy, Toby!
