OU & Texas Headed to the SEC Early After Huge Payout

After a lengthy process, OU and Texas have reached an agreement with the Big12 to leave for the Southeastern Conference in 2024 costing the Sooners and Longhorns $100 million to leave one year early.

While it seems like a large sum of money, especially considering OU's billion dollars of debt, it's an amount officials insist will easily be paid for through future broadcast rights.

While this is a whirlwind conference shakeup, OU has had Sooner teams associated with the SEC and other smaller conferences for years... just not the big varsity sports like football, baseball, wrestling, or basketball.

What does this mean for Bedlam?

The annual OU/OSU football game is one of the oldest rivalries in college sports, and while this will effectively be the end of any actual meaning behind the game, odds are they'll play each other still in the future. There's just no telling how often, but as the conference shakeup will leave OSU as the predicted dominant Big12 team, we might see Bedlam in a bowl series within the next few years.

What's going to happen to the Big12?

This isn't the first Big12 exit of a team. Colorado, Missouri, Nebraska, and Texas A&M left the conference in 2011 leaving the conference scrambling to find more teams. The Big12 has been a 10-team conference since then. Instead of reverting back to the pre-1996 Big 8, four new teams are set to join later this summer.

BYU, Houston, Cinncinati, and the University of Central Florida.

Being so spread out, it's as if the Big12 is starting to reflect Conference-USA... but at the end of the day, it's only football.

Will the Big12 be serious contenders?

It's a fair question, but so much has changed over the last couple of years, the odds of a future Big12 team winning a national title are dwindling.

Since the NCAA ruled that players can now be paid, the big schools with the biggest budgets will tend to soak up all of the top talents.

Looking at the schedule, the last Bedlam game will take place in Stillwater this November.
