The Comanche County Memorial Hospital Foundation and the Lawton Fire Department are working to establish Lawton's first Safe Haven Baby Box. The foundation recently made a donation to the fire department so the department can begin working on installing Lawton's first Safe Haven Baby Box.

On August 6, the Comanche County Memorial Hospital Foundation posted a video to its Facebook page with the Lawton Fire Department and Dee Dee Armes presenting a check to Fire Chief Jared Williams and Assistant Fire Chief Kyle Nyhart. The check is intended to help the Lawton Fire Department get started on adding a Safe Haven Baby Box to Fire Station No. 5, which is located on the corner of NW 53rd and Gore Boulevard.

In the Facebook post, the foundation stated that the Safe Haven Baby Box at the station will "offer a compassionate and secure option for mothers in crisis who are unable to care for their newborns."

Safe Haven Baby Boxes are to prevent illegal abandonment of babies and offer assistance to struggling mothers.

According to its website, Safe Haven Baby Boxes provide a means to prevent the illegal abandonment of babies and a crisis hotline for mothers. The Safe Haven Baby Boxes are often established at local fire stations and hospitals. The boxes are installed on exterior to provide a safe an anonymous surrender.

Each Safe Haven Baby Box has an exterior door that locks automatically when a baby is placed inside and an interior door to allow medical personnel or firefighters to immediately and safely retrieve the baby.
