Spring-Like Thunderstorms On Tap for Oklahoma
Punxsutawney Phil may have been right about spring coming early in Oklahoma!
This week sure felt like spring in Oklahoma with temperatures in the 60s. All Okies this week had many conversations starting off with, "Isn't the weather so beautiful today?!" But all Oklahomans know that with the nice spring weather, we also get big spring thunderstorms.
Oklahoma will experience two rounds of serve thunderstorms this afternoon (Friday, Feb. 2). The first round will start developing north and south of I-40 between 2-8 p.m. this afternoon/evening. The first round is expected to move south of Altus and Lawton between 5-8 p.m.
The second round of thunderstorms will move through Oklahoma in a broken line segment (squall line) into the overnight hours. These storms could be strong or serve as they make their way through the Sooner State between the hours of 7 p.m. to 1 a.m. Saturday.
Flooding will be possible with these storms for most of Oklahoma!
With these thunderstorms will come heavy rain which could lead to flash flooding in most areas of Oklahoma. From Friday afternoon to early Saturday morning, minor flooding may be possible in low-lying and flood-prone areas across the Sooner State.
Will there be any tornadoes?
It wouldn't truly be spring in Oklahoma without tornadoes! So will there be tornadoes with this round of spring-like storms? Not likely. According to the National Weather Service in Norman, although the storms will be like ones Oklahoma sees in the spring, the tornado threat is very low.
