Oklahoma Stores Set Purchase Limit On Eggs

The avian flu continues to affect the price of eggs at the grocery store, and now stores in Oklahoma are setting a purchase limit on eggs. Those in Oklahoma who shop at Trader Joe's, Costco and Sprouts will see signs limiting how many cartons of eggs people can purchase at one time.

Due to the avian flu outbreak, the United States Department of Agriculture is predicting that egg prices will increase by another 20 percent, which will raise the national egg price average to $5.41 a dozen. More than 150 million chickens have been wiped out due to the avian flu outbreak, thus putting a strain on the egg supply, which causes prices to increase and now purchase limits.

Major stores announce egg purchase limits nationwide.

Over the last week, three major stores announced egg purchase limits in their stores nationwide, which includes locations in Oklahoma. Trader Joes, Costco and Sprouts have put a purchase limit on how many cartons of eggs shoppers can purchase.

Trader Joe's has limited shoppers to one dozen eggs per customer, per day. Sprouts has limited egg purchases to four dozen, and online, Costco is limiting egg quantities to five.

Social media videos of people loading up carts and giant push carts with crates of eggs at Costco have been going viral since the end of January.

Restaurants have began issuing surcharges on egg dishes.

Restaurants are one of the most hardest hit industries due to the avian flu. Egg prices have also increased for restaurants and have lead some to issue a surcharge on all egg dishes. One of America's largest breakfast restaurants, Waffle House, announced that it would add a 50 cent surcharge per egg due to the current egg shortage.
