A ‘Twisters’ Sequel Is Reportedly In Development; Will It Be Filmed In Oklahoma?
"Twisters" was a blockbuster hit in 2024, and Oklahomans flocked to local theaters in droves to see the movie of the summer. The movie was based in Oklahoma, like its 1996 predecessor "Twister," and both were filmed in Oklahoma. Now entertainment insiders have heard that a sequel to "Twisters" is in development.
Daniel Richtman is an well-known entertainment insider, and reported earlier this week that Universal Pictures and Warner Brothers are developing a sequel to "Twisters" starring Glen Powell and Daisy Edgar Jones. And production may begin as early as 2026. But does that mean a "Twisters" sequel will be filmed in Oklahoma?
What could a 'Twisters' sequel be about?
There's no indication as to what a "Twisters" sequel could be about, but we do know for sure it has to include tornadoes. And Screenrant suggested that a good subject for a "Twisters" sequel would be to focus on a flashback Tyler, played by Powell, told Kate, played by Edgar Jones, about how experiencing a tornado with his aunt made him want to chase storms.
Screenrant indicated that this flashback could be a way of connecting the 1996 "Twister" to "Twisters" by making Tyler's aunt Jo Harding, played by Helen Hunt. But would focusing on Tyler's flashback and how he got into storm chasing take the film to Arkansas, since that's where Tyler is from?
'Twisters' had significant economic impact on Oklahoma.
"Twisters" excited Oklahomans while the movie was filming across the state throughout 2022 and 2023. And Oklahomans also contributed to the box office success of "Twisters," which garnered $80 million on opening weekend in July of 2024.
But "Twisters" also had a significant economic impact aside from the box office success nationwide and at Oklahoma movie theaters. After the film's successful release, Prairie Surf Media out of Oklahoma City, which hosted some of the production of "Twisters," released data on how the filming of the movie positively impacted Oklahoma.
The filming of "Twisters" brought in jobs to Oklahoma and boosted the local economy. Below, provided by Prairie Surf Media, are some of the highlights from "Twisters" being filmed in Oklahoma.
- The blockbuster is projected to have a $258 million economic impact for Oklahoma.
- Over 370 Oklahomans served on the crew for "Twisters."
- "Twisters" garnered 28,000 hotel nights in Oklahoma City.
- Serving as extras were 1,350 Oklahomans.
- The film spent $120 million dollars statewide.
- "Twisters" filmed in various locations throughout Oklahoma, including Oklahoma City, Chickasha, El Reno, Howe, Midwest City and Spencer.
Needless to say, Oklahoma as a whole, from residents to those in the film business, would be ecstatic if a "Twisters" sequel was to be filmed in Oklahoma.
