Gov. Kevin Stitt Warns Oklahoma Tribes About Abortion Safe Havens

Oklahoma Governor Kevin Stitt was on Fox News Sunday and discussed the state's new abortion laws and addressed the rumors about Oklahoma tribes creating abortion safe havens on tribal lands. Recently state legislators wrote and passed several anti-abortion bills that would nearly outlaw the practice in the state.

Oklahoma has written a "trigger law" that would go into effect if the Supreme Court overturns 'Roe v Wade' which would ban abortions after six weeks unless a woman's life was in jeopardy. Basically, it would ban abortions in the state. However, since over half of Oklahoma is tribal land there could be legal loopholes.

The law would make it a felony to perform an abortion and punishable by up to 10 years in prison and up to a $100,000 fine. After it was announced rumors began to swirl about the legalities of the law and if abortions were performed on tribal lands the state would have no authority to enforce the law or in any way intervene.

Since the state can not prosecute crimes committed on tribal lands, that's up to tribal law and the Federal government, sort of. If abortion safe havens were to happen and clinics opened up on tribal lands there's little to nothing the state could do about it. During the interview, Gov. Stitt addresses this as well.

He also warned that if that happens "Oklahomans will not think very well of that" if certain tribes decide to open up abortion clinics on reservations and tribal lands. Oklahoma legislators are now realizing that the abortion law loopholes are more than obvious and wouldn't be difficult to exploit if the tribes challenge it.

Nothing has been officially announced by any of the Oklahoma tribes one way or another about creating abortion safe havens or clinics on tribal lands. At this time it's all rumor and speculation. It'll be very interesting to see how this develops and despite the Governor's warning I doubt it will have any effect whatsoever.
