Oklahoma legislators are talking about gun control after the recent mass shootings that took place in Taft and Tulsa, OK. as well as across the Nation. Some lawmakers suggest that the state has too few laws and regulations regarding firearms and the safety of the general public. Recently Rep. Monroe Nichols D-Tulsa introduced several measures related to gun control at a press conference last week on Thursday (06-02-22).

The Oklahoma House Democratic Caucus announced a plan that they say will help prevent gun violence through a series of gun safety measures. It's called the SAVE Act (Stand Against Violence and Extremism Act). It seeks to repeal several current Oklahoma gun laws and introduce additional laws to the books. They allege that the SAVE Act and I quote: "institutes popular, bipartisan solutions to gun violence."

So what exactly are they trying to do? The SAVE Act would repeal permitless carry in the state, prevent anyone other than law enforcement from carrying concealed at any public park or zoo, remove all anti-red-flag laws in the state, introduce a new waiting period when purchasing firearms, raise the age limit to 21 for purchasing any firearm and create a new statewide red flag law. The language has changed, but the results are the same. Recently democrats have stopped using the phrase "gun control." Instead, they use the phrase "gun safety measures." So why the change all of a sudden? Well, first it's well known that "gun control" is a divisive term that immediately alienates at least half the people you're speaking with. Sure some will agree, others with vehemently oppose. But if you say "gun safety" it's softer and more easily digested, at least that's the hope. I mean after all who would oppose "gun safety?"

Don't buy into it, their ideal of "gun safety" is "gun control." Also, the SAVE Act is hardly going to be even remotely popular, or bipartisan. What they're wanting to repeal and introduce will be resisted immediately, as it should in my opinion. What they're proposing won't in any way save lives or help in the prevention of gun violence. So what will it do? Simply put it will further, restrict the gun rights of law-abiding citizens.

So like all other forms of "gun control, sorry, gun safety measures" it will only affect the law-abiding. Meanwhile, the criminals will do what they've always done. Completely ignore it! When will we finally stop persecuting citizens and start prosecuting criminals? Criminals by their very name and definition are CRIMINALS. Meaning no matter what you introduce, pass, and attempt to enforce they're not going to obey.

A person who is willing to break the most serious of laws and commit the most heinous of crimes WILL NOT be thwarted by any law or restriction. Don't believe me? Murder is already illegal, yet they do it. Using a firearm in any criminal fashion is illegal, yet they do it. Stealing guns or having them in your possession as a felon is illegal, yet they do it. Carrying guns in "gun-free zones" is illegal, yet they do it. Shooting, killing, and injuring others is illegal, yet they do it. So sure let's add some more laws and "gun control" they'll ignore.

That's just my opinion and I'm entitled to it. Or at least I used to me anyway. Our freedoms do not hinge on the criminal acts of others. More laws and gun control aren't the answer. So what is? it's found in the immortal and uncompromising words of Col. Jeff Cooper: “If violent crime is to be curbed, it is only the intended victim who can do it. The felon does not fear the police, and he fears neither judge nor jury. Therefore what he must be taught to fear is his victim.” Being helpless doesn't make criminals harmless!
