How To Measure Snow

Southwest Oklahoma woke up to giant snow flurries falling from the sky! So far Southwest Oklahoma is predicted to get anywhere from four to six inches of snow.

Snow doesn't fall evenly, so it's beneficial to our local meteorologists to measure snow in your areas, but you have to do it the correct way for accurate readings.

This morning, Southwest Oklahoma saw anywhere from one to three inches, and is expected to receive more throughout the day! But some areas will receive more snow than others, so the local weather stations are asking viewers to measure the snow that has fallen on their property.

Here's How to Measure Snow Accurately

What you'll need:

• A ruler or yard stick
• A flat surface

Where to measure:

• Find an open area away from tall objects (You don't want to measure a snow drift!)

Once you have your supplies and your area selected, you'll stick your ruler/yard stick in the snow and measure. Be sure to take a picture!

Southwest Oklahoma can report their snow measurements to KSWO 7 News at weather@kswo.com or to the National Weather Service in Norman at sr-oun.weather@noaa.gov. Make sure you include the pictures!

You can also report what type of precipitation you're seeing.

Some areas start off with rain before it turned into snow, so the National Weather Service in Norman asked citizens in Southwest Oklahoma to report what types of precipitation they were seeing early this morning.
