Beginning today, the Playground in the Park, located on the east side of Lawton's Elmer Thomas Park, will be shut down for improvements that will make the playground a lot more inhabitable during summer months.

A shade structure, consisting of sail like coverings, will be built over the playground's equipment to make the equipment more enjoyable and safe as summer temperatures climb. Funded by a $200,000 grand from the McMahon Foundation, the project has been contracted to RTA Playground Equipment, and will be sub-contacted to several local contractors.

Work on the project is expected to take three weeks, and Lawton residents will be notified upon completion of the project and the re-opening of the playground.
