It has been a wet summer so far in Oklahoma, and it looks like that trend is expected to continue Tuesday with a chance for strong to severe storms in the afternoon and evening. These storms could produce damaging wind gusts, heavy rainfall, hail and lightning.

According to the National Weather Service in Norman, thunderstorms are expected to develop along a front Tuesday afternoon in northern Oklahoma and move southward into the evening. These storms could produce wind speeds up to 70 miles per hour and hail up to quarter size. Heavy rain and frequent lightning are also possible hazards. The tornado potential for Tuesday is very low.

Heavy rainfall could lead to localized flooding on Tuesday.

The storms expected for Tuesday do have the potential to produce heavy rainfall which could lead to localized flooding. According to FEMA, localized flooding occurs in a specific/limited area, even during minor storms with heavy rainfall, because the "runoff overloads the drainageways and flows into the streets and low-lying areas."

Localized flooding is still dangerous to people and property, even if it doesn't flood large regions. Children and adults can easily be knocked down and swept away by just a few inches of water. And just two feet of water can float away vehicles.
