Summer is heating up in Oklahoma, and with the combination of warm, moist air and frequent rainfall, Oklahoma is now the perfect breeding ground for mosquitos. Right now, when you go outside in Oklahoma, you're accosted by hot, thick air and swarms of mosquitoes. There's not much residents can do about the temperature and humidity, but people can take action against the mosquitoes.

There are a myriad of ways people can ward off mosquitoes, like using repellents in the forms of sprays, lights, plants, etc. But one of the best ways to make your yard mosquito free is to create a mosquito bucket of doom. People who have bird baths or other forms of standing water in their yards know they can use mosquito dunks to keep mosquitos from breeding in the water. But what most people don't know is they can use mosquito dunks and water to create a mosquito bucket of doom.

@gardenandsoul MOSQUITO DOOM BUCKETS!! . . . . We are already getting consumed by mosquitoes this season. With there not being any mosquito sprays for the yard that won't harm beneficial insects as well, this is one of the ways our family will be managing them this year! 5 gal bucket with or without lids mosquito dunks or mosquito bits leaf litter that's it! the rotting leaf litter releases carbon dioxide that attracts mosquitoes the dunks or bits contain bti- a natural larvae killer that doesn't harm other insects or wildlife. #pollinatorsareimportant #fyp #mosquito #mosquitoes #mosquitodoombucket #lowes #pestcontrol ♬ Show Me the Good Stuff - Becca Lynn

Make a mosquito bucket of doom with a bucket, water, grass and mosquito dunks.

You don't need much to make a mosquito bucket of doom. You may even already have most of the supplies. Here's what you need to make a mosquito bucket of doom:

  • A Bucket
  • Water
  • Grass
  • Mosquito Dunks or Bits

Just four simple items that will keep your yard mosquito free! What you'll need to do is put grass in the bucket, which will attract mosquitoes, then add water, about half full, and then add in one fourth of a mosquito dunk or throw in a teaspoon of mosquito bits!

@rebelssanctuary If you’re in the south, the mosquitos do not play. I made only two buckets, but I’ll probably make a couple more since it’s so cheap! P.S. I don’t take credit for this easy DIY! I saw another creator make this and thought it was soo smart! #backyard #mosquito #summer ♬ Old Man - Neil Young

Mosquito buckets of doom don't harm pollinators.

Another great thing about the mosquito buckets of doom is that they don't harm pollinators! Mosquito repellent sprays are harmful to pollinators, like bees and butterflies. But the mosquito dunks in the mosquito buckets of dooms are not harmful to pollinators! So the mosquito buckets of doom will benefit you by limiting mosquitoes and by saving local pollinators for mosquitoes and the harmful repellents.

Oklahoma's Beneficial Insects

Not all insects are pests! There are some insects that are beneficial to you and your garden. In a study by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service on beneficial insects, "most insects found in yards, gardens or crops do not feed on or harm plants. Many are just 'passing through' or have very innocuous habits. Others feed on and destroy pest species. In many cases, the activities of these beneficial species can prevent or greatly limit pest problems."
