It's true, as soon as Oklahoma gets a hint that there will be any kind of winter weather, everything shuts down. Oklahomans flee to the grocery store to stock up on bread and milk. Schools start announcing closures or virtual days. And businesses post on their social media pages about being closed for the safety of their staff.

Those states that consistently have winter weather often look down on Oklahoma for their reaction to snow or ice. They say things like, "Oklahomans are babies. It's just snow." Well, there are a few things out of Oklahoman's control when it comes to winter weather.

The main, legitimate reason is because Oklahoma municipalities do not possess the infrastructure to keep a city functioning during winter weather. Snow plows would be a waste of money to be used once or twice a year, or not even at all for several years. And even though they're not being used, they still require maintenance, and that would be another waste of money.

But one Oklahoma TikToker pointed out two other reasons Oklahoma calls it quits during winter weather.

The reasons they point out may not be legitimate, but they did provide a few giggles for some Oklahomans. The TikTok starts out point out that yes, Oklahoma shuts down during a winter storm, and people like to talk trash about us Okies for it.

And they also point out our lack of infrastructure for winter weather, but gives Oklahomans props for not shutting things down for a tornado except for outside sports. But they say two other things have to be considered when talking about why Oklahoma shuts down during winter weather.

A. Oklahoma has a lot of bad drivers.

B. Oklahoma also has a lot of Dodge Ram and Ford F-150 truck owners.

So with both of those types of Oklahomans out on the road, you got bad drivers who don't know what they're doing and and the truck drivers don't care what they're doing. Therefore the TikToker says if you take those two groups of people and give them somewhere important they have to be and toss in slick road conditions, then you are going to have, and quote, "mass f****** chaos."

They wrap up saying that Oklahoma should actually get a bad rap for having both of these types of drivers, saying "it's more embarrassing."

Are these actually real reasons for Oklahoma shutting down due to winter weather?

Yes and no. Safety is top priority when it comes to any type of weather in Oklahoma. Since Oklahomans aren't used to driving in winter weather, it's best not to give them any forced practice because it could result in several accidents that could only cause more, unnecessary accidents.

Either way, it's better than to be safe than sorry! So if you have to drive during winter weather in Oklahoma, make sure you're checking the road conditions. And take a few notes on the winter driving tips below.

Basic Driving Tips For Snow & Ice

While you would assume that these are common knowledge, you'd be surprised how many people haven't lived in a place where they would learn these skills.

The Frozen Wichita Mountains

When Southwest Oklahoma gets a rare blizzard with serious snowfall, the mountains take on a fresh and stunning look. It's something we all get to experience thanks to the video and camera work of a few awesome locals with a stellar YouTube channel, The Pemberton Boys. They flew their drones and explored the mountains across SWOK while the views were grand, putting it online for everyone to enjoy.
