Heat advisories are usually found in the summer in Oklahoma, but unfortunately, most of Oklahoma will be under a heat advisory a few weeks into fall. The National Weather Service in Norman has issued a heat advisory for most of Oklahoma from noon to 8 p.m. Friday, Sept. 20.

It has been a warm start to fall in Oklahoma. Some areas have seen temperatures above 100. As for Friday, Sept. 20, the heat index value is expected to be over 105 degrees for several areas of Oklahoma. The hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses, which is why a heat advisory has been put in place.

Oklahomans are urged to take precautionary actions if outside for long periods of time on Friday, Sept. 20. This means being sure to drink plenty of fluids and take plenty of breaks. Oklahomans are also encouraged to stay in air-conditioning and out of the sun. Also, they should check on vulnerable relatives and neighbors.

The good news: a strong fall cold front is on the way to Oklahoma.

Luckily, Oklahomans and their air conditioners will get a break form the heat as strong fall cold front is expected to move through the state this weekend. According to the National Weather Service in Norman, the cold front is expected to move through Sunday, Sept. 22 and will increase chances of showers and storms.

Rain chances are expected to start late Saturday across northwest Oklahoma and then spread to the rest of Oklahoma into Sunday. And for another bout of good news: these storms have the potential for heavy rainfall. This is especially good since several areas of Oklahoma are experiencing an extreme drought.

And the break from the heat will be significant for Oklahoma. By Monday, Sept. 23, most of Oklahoma will have daily high temperatures in the 80s or cooler and overnight lows in the 50s. These cooler temperatures are expected to hang around into early to middle of next week.
