Saturday, April 26 was a crazy, wet day in Lawton, Oklahoma! The area received so much rain early in the morning that various areas around town experienced dangerous flooding and some areas had to be evacuated. One of the businesses that experienced flooding Saturday was Naturescape, and it caused the annual Arbor Day Free Tree Giveaway to be postponed.
Each year Parks Jones Realty and Naturescape partner together to giveaway 300 trees for Arbor Day. This year's event was scheduled for 9 a.m. Saturday, April 26, but the storms in Lawton started much earlier than that!
We were on site Saturday hosting a lie remote and were giving updates on the event. At first, the tree giveaway was going to be postponed till 1 p.m. Saturday but it just kept raining and the nursery at Naturescape began to flood!
Park Jones Realty and Naturescape made the decision to reschedule the free tree giveaway to 9 a.m. Saturday, May 3.
More flooding coming for Lawton this week!
Multiple homes and businesses are still cleaning up after Saturday's flooding, including Naturescape. Unfortunately, more flooding is expected for Lawton this week! Multiple days of scattered thunderstorms will lead to flooding in Lawton, specifically Tuesday and Wednesday this week. KFOR Meteorologist Mike Morgan is expecting the worst flooding to be Tuesday evening.
The Comanche County/Lawton Emergency Management office is encouraging people in Lawton to remain weather aware this week, to make flood preparations and to remember to turn around and don't drown!
Turn around and don't drown is especially important to remember as, on Saturday, local emergency responders responded to many people stranded in flooded waters. There was even one fatality in Lawton due to attempting to drive through a flooded street. So everyone in Lawton should take caution this week, and please remember, turn around and don't drown!
