The Lawton FFA will have over 4,000 plants for sale.

The great thing about the annual Lawton FFA Plant Sale is that there are so many plants to choose from! The bonus is that it helps out local students in FFA. This year, Lawton Public Schools stated that the Lawton FFA Plant Sale will have about 4,000 plants for sale!

The four inch pots will be filled with geraniums, begonias, rose moss, dianthus and three varieties of sweet potato vines. The kitchen baskets will feature a collection of Italian herbs, including sage, garlic and cloves. And the hanging baskets will be filled with different types of flowers - Chole's Song will feature a collection of pink and white flowers and Whispers of Down will include a collection of pink flowers with black sweet potato vines. The plant sale will also have two kinds of ferns available: Boston Fern and Fluffy Ruffles.

According to a press release from Lawton Public Schools, the horticulture and ad instructor, Emily Wilkinson, said the students have been working on the plants since mid-January. The plants arrive as plugs and students transplant and care for the plants until ready for the sale.

Oklahoma's Beneficial Insects

Not all insects are pests! There are some insects that are beneficial to you and your garden. In a study by the Oklahoma Cooperative Extension Service on beneficial insects, "most insects found in yards, gardens or crops do not feed on or harm plants. Many are just 'passing through' or have very innocuous habits. Others feed on and destroy pest species. In many cases, the activities of these beneficial species can prevent or greatly limit pest problems."
