A lot of Okies are into thrifting! And some thrift shop stops include local Goodwills. But certain name brands will no longer be stocked in store.

Usually, when you donate to your local Goodwill, you expect your items will be stocked in that local store and will, eventually, help those in need. But a recent TikTik has unveiled that Goodwill is actually planning on moving certain name brands to an online auction platform.

For those who don't know, Goodwill is, technically a nonprofit, but it does appear to have some very corporate greed practices. According to an article from Medium, "less than one-eight of the company's profit goes toward charity work."

And a TikTok posted by @mcharpymeal, reveals that Goodwill is planning to take certain name brand donations out of local stores and added to an online auction. These name brands are some that have gained recent popularity among the thrifting community - essentially to make more money off these items. But a lot of these brands are considered fast fashion, meaning they're typically mass produced and cheaply made.

According to @mcharpymeal, they found a leaked Goodwill list on Reddit stating that these items "will no longer be in stores and moved to their online website to be auctioned off." Below is a screenshot from the Reddit thread r/VintageTees that originally posted the list of brands.

The TikTok goes over the three tier system from the list of items to be removed from the store to go online.

  • Tier 3 - Best Quality - Send only if new with tags $60 or higher
    • These include brands like Abercrombie & Fitch, Gap, Hollister, etc.
  • Tier 2 - Better Quality - Send if in good condition
    • Brands include Calvin Klein, Carhart, Michael Kors, etc.
  • Tier 1 - Best Quality - Send if in good condition
    • These include brands like Adidas, Coach, Columbia, Nike, etc.

You can see the full lists of brands on @mcharpymeal's TikTok below.

In the comments of the TiKTok, a lot of people were very surprised by this action by Goodwill. But according to the TikTok creator @mcharpymeal, they commented saying that Goodwill has been auctioning for years, but the difference now is that instead of only auctioning designer brands they've added fast fashion to the mix.

Things Goodwill Doesn't Want You to Donate

Goodwill has always had an impossibly solid business model... People give their stuff to them for free. Goodwill sells it in-store and online. Instant profits... but there is a limit to what they will accept on the back dock. Here's a quick rundown of what Goodwill might turn away.
